Deer Left Over’s Pulling in Rats!

This article is a little off topic but wanted to share my story. I have been butchering my own deer for a couple of years now and have never had an issue with rodents up until this year.

I have butchered three deer this year by our shed where we hang them. Over the weekend we were cleaning up around the shed and seen something run across on the side of the shed. At first I thought it was a field mouse but thought to myself “that was a big mouse!) After checking behind a board where it ran I about dropped to the floor, it was a rat! I have always kept my work area clean and sanitary so I was pretty shocked (and ticked because he got away while I was standing there stunned). I do not stand for rats at all so it had to be dealt with by finding out why he was there and if he had a family.

The only explanation I could think of was that possibly the blood droppings caught they nose of a passing rat. To confirm this I purchased some rat traps and baited them with some bloody meat. It didn’t even take 24 hours to get that sucker in the track. He was there the next morning. The rest of the traps were empty. I re-baited the trap and left them out for a week checking them daily. I got 2 mice and that is it. I’m pretty comfortable that the rat was alone and passing by and I feel like I dodged a bullet. If I did not see him, I could have been overrun with them in no time. I have learned to keep traps out during the hunting months to make sure I never run into another issue.

On a side note, I would like to thank Dave from www.pestek.co.uk for a great product and fast shipping.
