Cooking Ideas While Camping

Food is always on the top of our list when planning our next camping trip. Should we cook or take pre-made food… It always depends o what type of camping we will be doing. We mostly camp at camp grounds. We have a pop-up camper that has a stove, microwave and fridge (yes this is still real camping lol). If we camper tent then we almost always cook all our food on site, breakfast and all. At times we make something that just needs to be warmed up, even if it just  the first nights dinner. If hiking things change a lot and we take as little as possible. In this article we will go over some ideas of easy to make camping meals. No matter what meals you decide on I can not stress enough to make sure you have the right camping cookware needed for what you are cooking. It will save a lot of headache and make things that much more enjoyable.

Easy Camping Food

Chili

If you are going on a short weekend trip and do not want to spend a lot of time preparing meals this option might a lot of sense for you. Chili is easy to make at home and you can make a big pot that will feed a family a couple dinners on a budget. We cook it a couple days in advance or even earlier. We place the chili in a “good” zip-lock bag and just place it in a cooler. Easy to store and can be warmed up on a camping stove or open fire. You can get a tripod stand that goes over that gives you a level cooking area.

Sandwich Iron

Sandwiches

We do a lot of these for lunches. Who wants to spend a lot of prep time when there is hiking to do! Easy to store lunch meat and condiments. If bread is an issue to pack you can always use flat bead or tortillas. You can make sandwiches fun for the kids by making grilled cheese or ham and cheese over the fire with a sandwich iron. They are good!

Hot Dogs

This might sound kind of, duh, but some people forget how fun they are to cook over an open fire. I would advise not to use a stick, unlike marshmallows, you will drop them in the fire. This is known by trial and error.

Other Grilling Goodies

There is of course all the other grilling goodies like burgers, steaks, etc. For this I suggest the tripod that sits over your fire. Nothing beats a burger while camping. The issue is when it comes to the side items. We skip this side items and get corn from the store. It is easy to store and cooks right in the fire pit.

Dehydrated Food

This is ideal for hiking trips more than camper or tent camping. Just add water and you are set. This is not going to be the best tasting choice but they are easy to carry and you can take days worth of food on your trip.

Coffee

I hate to be the one to have to tell you but there is no easy to make coffee choice. Sure there is instant coffee that can be made but,,,, yuck… I suggestion is to suck it up and either pack your coffee pot and plug it into the camp site plug or find a coffee percolator to throw over the hot coals of the fire with the tripod stand.

So the idea of this article here is to get you thinking. Having the right camping cookware will make your camping trip much more enjoyable. Your choices are endless if have it. Heck, shish kabobs become a great dinner with the right equipment.
